CLEANING PROCEDURES FOR REMOVING RUBBER RESIDUE
FROM AIRPORT RUNWAYS WITH AEROGREEN 4035

The following video provides directions on using AEROGREEN Runway Rubber Remover with a brooming method:

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

  1. Applicator Vehicles, with a 500-1000 gallon holding tank and pressurized Spray system.
  2. Sweepers, minimum of two with 48-inch dia X 16-ft. length wire brushes with hydraulic controls to adjust the down force.

  3. Water truck, with a minimum of 45 psi and 2500 gallon capacity with pressurized rinse jets.

  4. Vacuum Sweeper with a magnetic bar attached as a precaution to pick up any metal debris that may be on the runway surface.

*Please call Hi-Lite Solutions with questions about your specific equipment and compatibility*

AEROGREEN 4035 DILUTION:

  1. Dilution ratio is a 1:1 ratio. To reduce foaming Add water to applicator truck first then add AEROGREEN 4035 cleaner. Each drum of concentrate should yield enough cleaner for 10,000 Square foot per 55-gallon drum.

STEP 1-RUNWAY PREPARATION & APPLICATION:

Before application all equipment should assemble on the runway,

  1. The water trucks should make a complete pass over the runway surfaces to be cleaned and sprayed with water to cool down the surface.

  2. The sweepers should make a full pass, with the brushes in high speed, in the opposite direction of where the airplanes land, to score the surface of the rubber prior to applying the cleaner.

  3. Run the applicator truck with the spray jets set approximately 12 inches above the rubber surface to apply the diluted cleaner to the runway as needed. It is critical that the affected work area remain saturated with AEROGREEN 4035 to achieve optimal results. Continue until the runway is completely saturated.

  4. Allow the AEROGREEN 4035 to stand on the runway surface for 10-15 minutes to penetrate the rubber build up. The solution will start to turn a dark color as the rubber begins to dissolve.

STEP 2-CLEANING PROCESS:

  1. SCRUBBING -WASHING: After AEROGREEN has begun to dissolve the rubber, begin by making passes with the brooms angled towards the center line.

  2. Run the brushes at a high speed with the brushes angled toward the centerline to force the clear to stay on the runway surface.

  3. Adjust the down pressure of the brooms so that the brooms are cutting into the soften rubber.

  4. Run the sweepers in in formation with the brooms angled toward the center line during cleaning.

  5. Run the applicator truck with the diluted AEROGREEN 4035 in front of the scrubbing brooms to keep the surface wet and prevent the cleaning solution from drying out during the cleaning process. Continue making passes over the runway until the surface is clean.

Note: Do Not Allow AEROGREEN 4035 to dry on the surface without rinsing with water after brushing step: The rubber that has been dissolved by AEROGREEN 4035 may redeposit to the surface. This may require additional time in cleaning. On hot sunny days or windy days this may be prevented by having the water truck make several passes with the sweepers during the washing cycle.

STEP 3-RINSING:

  1. Start rinsing at the center using a water truck followed by a sweeper. Apply water at full pressure. The sweepers, behind the water truck, should run the brushes at a high speed with the brushes angled toward the edge to force the water to the side. Increase radius of laps working rinse water towards the edge by rotating the brush heads at a 45% angle; continue for 30 to 40 minutes until rinsing is completed.

STEP 4-VACUUM:

  1. If a vacuum is used to collect the dissolved solution, run the runway vacuum sweeper directly behind the rinse trucks to vacuum up all rinsed solution from the cleaning application. Transfer the used cleaning solution from the vacuum holding tank to dispose the waste water in accordance with all federal, state and local laws.

STEP 5-CLEAN UP:

  1. Once the operation is complete a post shift wash down of all equipment is a best practice. Throughout the removal operation the equipment will become dirty from the mist generated by the brooming action. This dirty mist is easily cleaned from the equipment immediately following completion of the operation. Allowing to the equipment to dry will generate more work cleaning and require intense scrubbing.
